Pain is often a prerequisite for physical and spiritual growth. If I search for easy days and avoid challenge, I’ll never grow to be a stronger person.
How do we gain physical strength? We challenge our bodies by inviting various forms of resistance, things that are uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful. Maybe we train our bodies in a gym with weights. Maybe we train our bodies on a bike or in a pool. Maybe we train our bodies in a yoga or stretching class. It is when we work through the physical difficulties of training our bodies that we develop strength, speed, stamina and flexibility.
How do we gain spiritual strength? We challenge our spirits with various forms of resistance, things that are uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful. Maybe we can train our spirit by making an overdue apology. Maybe we can train our Spirit by accepting responsibility for our part in a bitter conflict. Maybe we can train our spirit when we allow a friend to finish a story, even though we could tell it better. It is when we work through the spiritual difficulties that we develop healthy coping skills, resiliency and a zest for life.
A life of ease invites boredom, listlessness and a lack of purpose while a life of challenge invites excitement, passion and hope.
