I used to be perfect. Sounds a little arrogant doesn’t it? Well, the fact of the matter is that I was never perfect, but perfection was my daily intention. Wow, so much self induced stress.
There is peace in imperfection.
We have all done things in our lives about which we are not proud, things we wish we could undo or do over. Are you perfect? Do you expect other people to be perfect? I now realize that I am far from perfect. Perfection is not a standard of excellence but instead a fear of being ordinary, a fear of being human. I am gradually learning to accept imperfection and mistakes in myself and others as part of the basic “human hxperience”.
We often take pride in our ability to feel and extend compassion for other people who make mistakes. It is an incredible relief to admit and accept other people’s mistakes as just that, mistakes. Similarly it is a relief to admit and accept our own mistakes as just that, mistakes. If we can accept mistakes as a common experience in every day’s life journey, our self esteem, self confidence and and self worth will grow to be more healthy with respect to all our relationships with other people.
Imperfection makes each of us uniquely beautiful.
I find the best way to build my confidence, and self esteem is to replace negative self talk with positive affirmations. Looking honestly and unflinchingly at my personal behavior is my first priority, but at the same time having compassion for myself can help me live my life without the burden of regret. If I offer my best effort with the skills and tools I have today I am learning to be at peace with the results. Unless I can accept and embrace my virtues, I will be overwhelmed by my faults.
Let go of the need to be perfect. Compassion for self and others is a skill we must practice everyday. Practice makes progress. Progress is good.
