Too many people hold the misconception that the only way to meditate is to eliminate thoughts. Not true. Meditation can be experienced by focusing on a single thought or on a single action. Make it simple.
How can you meditate?
Simply sit comfortably and set a timer for 1-10 minutes. Be still. Commit to doing nothing more than sitting quietly and experience what happens. Don’t answer the phone, don’t talk, don’t add another item to your to-do list. Just sit and observe the thoughts that run through your mind. Listen to the sounds of life. With your eyes closed tune in to the sounds that surround you.
At first you’ll hear only the most obvious noises, but over time, you’ll discover new layers of sounds that you had previously tuned out. Challenge yourself to investigate what you hear. Notice that the world feels more alive as your awareness of the present deepens.
You will likely be surprised by how difficult it is to sit quietly and remain focused for 10 minutes. Remember, practice makes progress. and progress is good.
Experience a personal pause.
